Just in case you’re thinking of travelling to the Vendée or want to know more about this delicious region of France, I’ve put together some information which I hope you’ll find useful.
The tourist office and local information.
The capital of the Vendée is La Roche sur Yon and that’s where you’ll find their main tourist office. That said nearly every town of a reasonable size has a tourist office including at Fontenay le Comte, La Chataigneraie and Pouzauges. You can also check them out on line at www.vendee-tourisme.com which has an English version and you’ll find links to lots of the regional offices on my Facebook page.
For a closer look at local life, including the expat community and local businesses, another great resource is www.inthevendee.com
Hospitals and airports.
The three main international airports are at Nantes, La Rochelle and Poitiers and you’re never further than an hour away from one of those. If it’s an Accident and Emergency hospital you’re after there are emergency departments at hospitals in La Roche sur Yon, Les Sables d’Olonne, Lucon, Challans, Fontenay le Comte and Montaigu as well as major hospitals at Cholet, Nantes and Niort.
In case of a medical emergency, the number to dial is 15 (le Samu) and for fire it’s 18.
Don’t forget if you are driving in France you must have a warning triangle and a high visibility jacket which must both be kept within the vehicle for use in case of a breakdown. And if you’re travelling with a dog, you will need to visit a vets before you return to the UK. You can find out more about the rules here: https://www.gov.uk/take-pet-abroad and if you don’t comply, your pet will not be allowed back in to the UK.
I’ll keep on updating this page so please feel free to use it as a resource if you need any information about the Vendée.
